A Argentina caiu no chamado "Grupo da Morte". Após ter vencido a Nigéria por 1 a 0, perdeu para a Inglaterra por 1 a 0 e sucumbiu diante da Suécia num empate em 1 a 1. A Itália se classificou no seu grupo no saldo de gols, mas foi eliminada nas oitavas-de-final pela Coreia do Sul. Curiosamente em 1966, a Itália foi eliminada pela Coreia do Norte. Portugal perdeu surpreendentemente para os Estados Unidos por 3 a 2, pareceu recompor-se com uma vitória sobre a Polônia, e perdeu por 1 a 0 para a Coreia do Sul.

Foi a primeira vez que dois países sediaram unidos o evento, a primeira vez que três seleções - França, Japão e Coreia do Sul - estavam classificadas automaticamente e a primeira vez que uma edição da Copa não aconteceu na Europa ou nas Américas. Foi um avanço ao continente Asiático.
Foi a Copa das grandes surpresas e decepções. Do lado das surpresas contaram-se o Senegal (1 a 0 contra a França, 1 a 1 com a Dinamarca, 3 a 3 com o Uruguai, sendo eliminado só nas quartas-de-final pela Turquia, outra surpresa). Os turcos venderam caro a derrota para o Brasil, ficaram em 2º no grupo e perderam de novo para o Brasil, nas semifinais, por um 1 a 0. A Turquia pode queixar-se de um calendário de jogos mal feito, em parte devido ao fato do campeonato se disputar em dois países, dado que as equipes que se enfrentam na fase de grupos não devem voltar a jogar uma contra a outra, exceto na final. Na disputa do 3º lugar, a Turquia ganhou por 3 a 2 da Coreia do Sul, outra grande surpresa, ainda que beneficiada por jogar em casa. A Coreia ganhou da Polônia, Portugal, Itália, eliminou a Espanha e ficou em 4º lugar no Mundial.
Do lado das decepções estão a França, Argentina, Itália e Portugal. A França, favorita ao título, foi eliminada logo na 1ª fase, com 1 empate, 2 derrotas e nenhum gol marcado.
A Argentina caiu no chamado "Grupo da Morte". Após ter vencido a Nigéria por 1 a 0, perdeu para a Inglaterra por 1 a 0 e sucumbiu diante da Suécia num empate em 1 a 1. A Itália se classificou no seu grupo no saldo de gols, mas foi eliminada nas oitavas-de-final pela Coreia do Sul. Curiosamente em 1966, a Itália foi eliminada pela Coreia do Norte. Portugal perdeu surpreendentemente para os Estados Unidos por 3 a 2, pareceu recompor-se com uma vitória sobre a Polônia, e perdeu por 1 a 0 para a Coreia do Sul.
Brasil e Alemanha, os dois gigantes das Copas, chegaram a 2002 desacreditados por todos. No entanto, jogaram a final entre si. A Alemanha ganhou da Arábia Saudita por 8 a 0, Camarões 2 a 0, empatou 1 a 1 com a Irlanda, e depois venceu seus outros jogos todos por 1 a 0 até à final. O destaque alemão foi o goleiro Oliver Kahn, que só levou 3 gols durante o torneio.
O Brasil fez a seguinte campanha: 2 a 1 com a Turquia, 4 a 0 com a China, 5 a 2 com a Costa Rica, 2 a 0 frente à Bélgica, 2 a 1 sobre a Inglaterra, e 1 a 0 frente à Turquia. Na final, o Brasil ganhou por 2 a 0 da Alemanha. O Brasil chegou ao pentacampeonato, inédito, e igualou a Alemanha em número de finais consecutivas, três.
Na final o Brasil entrou em campo com a seguinte equipe: Marcos; Lúcio, Roque Júnior e Edmílson; Roberto Carlos, Gilberto Silva, Kléberson, Cafu (Capitão) e Ronaldinho Gaúcho; Rivaldo e Ronaldo.
Ronaldo foi o grande nome da Copa, pois todos duvidavam de sua capacidade física de disputar o mundial, devido a 2 anos de inatividade por causa de suas cirurgias no joelho. Os 3 R's brilharam: Ronaldo, Ronaldinho Gaúcho e Rivaldo. O técnico do Brasil foi Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Curiosidades:
* As mascotes da Copa foram Ato, Kaz e Nik.
* Quatro equipas qualificaram-se pela primeira vez: China, Equador, Senegal e Eslovênia.
* Ao marcar os dois gols na final, Ronaldo igualava o rei Pelé em gols marcados em Copas: 12 no total. Tal marca foi suplantada no Mundial seguinte, na Alemanha.
* Vários erros de arbitragem aconteceram na Copa de 2002: a Itália foi a mais prejudicada dentre todas as seleções participantes, chegando a ter cinco gols legítimos mal-anulados pelos árbitros. Um deles seria o gol de ouro de Damiano Tommasi, que colocaria a Azzurra nas quartas-de-final. A Espanha também acabou prejudicada pela arbitragem no jogo contra a Coreia do Sul, depois que o árbitro egípcio Gamal Al-Ghandour anulou dois gols legais da Fúria.
* Ao contrário da Itália e da Espanha, o Brasil foi triplamente favorecido pelos juízes: no jogo contra a Turquia, o árbitro sul-coreano Kim Young-Joo marcou pênalti que na verdade, era uma falta fora da área sofrida por Luizão. Outro erro do juiz foi quando o turco Alpay Özalan chutou a bola nas pernas de Rivaldo, que em seguida se atirou ao gramado, achando que tinha sido atingido no rosto. Kim Young-Joo caiu na lábia do meio-campista brasileiro e expulsou Alpay. Contra a Bélgica, o Brasil também acabou beneficiado por uma mancada da arbitragem: o jamaicano Peter Prendergast (que usava um apito verde e amarelo) marcou falta inexistente de Marc Wilmots sobre Roque Júnior quando o atacante belga marcou o gol para seu país.
* Mais um erro da arbitragem aconteceu na partida entre EUA e Alemanha: o escocês Hugh Dallas não marcou pênalti de Torsten Frings depois que este colocou deliberadamente sua mão na bola para auxiliar o goleiro Oliver Kahn, que estava caído no gramado.
* Após o encerramento do primeiro tempo do jogo entre Argentina e Suécia, Claudio Caniggia, convocado de surpresa pelo treinador Marcelo Bielsa para o torneio, acabou sendo expulso ainda no banco de reservas por reclamar de uma falta a favor dos Hermanos. Caniggia não disputou nenhuma partida na Copa de 2002 e se aposentou da Seleção Argentina após o incidente. A Argentina acabou caindo já na primeira fase, com quatro pontos marcados, ficando apenas à frente da Nigéria.
* No jogo entre Portugal e Coreia do Sul (primeira fase), João Pinto cometeu falta violenta em Park Ji-Sung e foi expulso. Inconformado, chegou a dar um soco na barriga do árbitro argentino Ángel Sánchez, e essa atitude ocasionou sua suspensão.
* O turco Hakan Şükür marcou o gol mais rápido das Copas do Mundo aos 11 segundos da partida contra a Coreia do Sul.
* Dois craques acabaram sendo mandados embora de suas equipes por discutir com os técnicos. O astro irlandês Roy Keane foi cortado da equipe por ordem do treinador Mick McCarthy, depois que ambos tiveram uma briga. Mesmo destino teve o esloveno Zlatko Zahovič, que discutiu com o treinador Srečko Katanec, a quem chamou de "invejoso".
* Outro jogador da Turquia, İlhan Mansız, derrubou as zebras da Copa. Marcou o gol de ouro contra o Senegal e marcou duas vezes contra a Coreia do Sul.
* A Arábia Saudita terminou a Copa com a pior campanha entre as 32 seleções participantes. O ponto baixo foi a acachapante derrota de 8 a 0 para a Alemanha. Foi a maior goleada desde os 10 a 1 da Hungria sobre El Salvador na Copa da Espanha, em 1982.
